Medicare Supplement 4th Quarter 2018 Results

Over the past few weeks CSG Actuarial has reported the 4th quarter 2018 Medicare Supplement enrollment results for United Healthcare, Anthem, Torchmark, and Humana.  We now have updates from other market leaders CVS Health and CNO Financial, summarized below.

 CVS Health Reports Results for 4th Quarter 2018

CVS Health completed its acquisition of Aetna in November 2018 and the results reported below for 4th quarter 2018 are for CVS Health.  Any information for prior periods is from previously reported results from Aetna.

For 4th quarter 2018, CVS Health reported Medicare Supplement member in-force counts of 793,000, up 18,000 and 53,000, respectively, from Aetna’s reported results for 3rd quarter 2018 and 4th quarter 2017.  The table below shows CVS Health’s Medicare Supplement enrollment counts for 4th quarter 2018 and Aetna’s Medicare Supplement enrollment counts by quarter from 4th quarter 2011 to 3rd quarter 2018.  CSG Actuarial projects CVS Health’s overall Medicare Supplement sales in the top 4 in the overall market for 2018.

CNO Financial Group Reports Medicare Supplement Sales in 4th Quarter 2018

CNO Financial Group (parent company of Bankers Life & Casualty, Washington National, and Colonial Penn) reported 4th quarter 2018 Medicare Supplement sales of $17.9 million, down 10% from 4th quarter 2017.  CNO Financial Group reported full year 2018 Medicare Supplement sales of $59.0 million, also down 10% from the full year 2017 result.  Based on projections from CSG Actuarial, the $59.0 million of sales for CNO Financial Group in 2018 ranked in the top 10 of the Medicare Supplement market.  CNO Financial Group also reported 4th quarter and full year 2018 Medicare Supplement earned premiums of $201 million and $815 million, respectively.  The premiums reported for 4th quarter and full year 2018 are both down 2% from the results reported for the previous year.
