Medicare Supplement market leader United Healthcare (UHC) released 4th quarter 2014 financials on January 21st, adding 35,000 Medicare Supplement lives in 4th quarter. The UHC report features Standardized and Modernized policy in-force counts of 3,750,000 as of 12/31/2014, a 295,000 increase in the past 12 months. The 295,000 policy count growth over the last year is an 8.5% increase over the policy counts at 12/31/2013.
While United Healthcare continues to lead the Medicare Supplement market by a wide margin in overall Medicare Supplement policy in-force counts and total new business sales by one carrier, it does appear that their growth may be slowing. The 8.5% annual growth percentage at 4th quarter 2014 is UHC’s lowest annual growth rate since 4th quarter 2012.
UHC’s slowing growth could be attributed to a softening in the UHC’s competitive position in the Medicare Supplement market. Per the CSG Actuarial Premium Rate Scorecard™, which provides an overall premium rate competitiveness ranking by company across all states, plans, ages, genders, and zip codes, UHC’s overall competitiveness ranking has dropped from 4th in the market at year-end 2013 to 15th in the market at year end 2014.
