2nd quarter 2013 results from Medicare Supplement companies continued the pattern of strong growth in policies in-force and earned premiums that has been evident in the market. United Healthcare, Aetna, and Humana reported substantial increases in in-force Medicare Supplement lives as of 6/30/2013, while Torchmark reported an 11% sales increase over 2nd quarter 2012.

UHC Maintains Medicare Supplement Growth

United Healthcare’s Medicare Supplement block continues to grow at a faster rate than any time in the past 6 years, adding 40,000 more lives in 2nd quarter 2013. The United Healthcare report shows Standardized and Modernized policy in-force counts of 3,365,000 as of 6/30/2013, a 290,000 increase over 6/30/2012. The 290,000 policy count growth over the last 12 months is a 9.4% increase over the policy counts at 6/30/2012. United Healthcare continues to lead the Medicare Supplement market by a wide margin in total new business sales and in-force lives by one carrier.


Aetna Continues Strong Medicare Supplement Growth

Aetna continues to report very strong growth in the Medicare Supplement market. In 2nd quarter 2013, Aetna’s reported Medicare Supplement member in-force counts of 341,000, up 28,000 from 1st quarter 2013. Aetna’s Medicare Supplement member counts have doubled over the last 18 months since Aetna acquired Genworth’s Medicare Supplement block during 4th quarter 2011. Aetna’s new sales continue to increase and now are in the top 3 of the Medicare Supplement market.

Humana Medicare Supplement Lives and Premiums Increase Again in 2nd Quarter 2013

Humana reported 2nd quarter 2013 Medicare Supplement lives of 90,300, a 3% increase over 1st quarter 2013 and 28% increase over 2nd quarter 2012. Humana also reported 2nd quarter 2013 Medicare Supplement premium of $44 million, up 26% from 2nd quarter 2012. Humana’s Medicare Supplement lives have increased 250% since the Modernized plans started being marketed in 2010. Humana’s Medicare Supplement sales continue to rank in the top 10 in the market.

Torchmark Reports Medicare Supplement Sales for 2nd Quarter 2013

Torchmark reported 2nd quarter 2013 Medicare Supplement annualized new sales of just under $7 million, an 11% increase over 2nd quarter 2012. Torchmark’s annualized new business sales over the past four quarters exceeds $45 million, continuing to rank in the top 12 in the overall Medicare Supplement market.
