Medicare Supplement market leader United Healthcare (UHC) released 3rd quarter 2016 financials on October 18th, adding 30,000 Medicare Supplement lives in 3rd quarter. The UHC enrollment table features Standardized and Modernized policy in-force counts of 4,245,000 as of 9/30/2016, a 235,000 increase in the past 12 months. The 235,000 policy count growth over the last year is a 5.9% increase over the policy counts at 9/30/2015, the lowest annual percentage growth rate since 2011. If current patterns continue, CSG Actuarial projects UHC’s in-force policy growth rate will continue to decline and be below 4.5% by the end of 2017.
CSG Actuarial’s sales projections from these policy in-force counts appear to indicate a decrease in new sales for UHC between 2016 and 2015, possibly driven by a weakened overall competitive position and new products from competitors.
