CSG Actuarial is reporting that the average Medicare Supplement new business rate increase implemented in 2014 was 4.3%, down from 5.0% in 2013. Companies continue to implement lower Medicare Supplement rate increases in recognition of lower claim trends being experienced across the market, due primarily to lower claim trends within Medicare and no increase in the Part B Deductible in 2014. The graph below plots the average increase by carrier in 2014. The averages are straight numerical averages of each company’s new business rate increases by state and plan, rolled up to the parent company level.
